Are there things coming out of the Trump presidency that are good for conservatives? Of course.
But why are you still #NeverTrump, you ask?
If we woke up one day and instead of a President, we had a king–even if that king did things conservatives like–like enforcing immigration laws, cracking down on absurd and politically correct regulations, and putting the media in their place–and did it all by decree, would we be ok with that? Sure, it’s not what the Founders wanted, and sure, people’s elected representatives would have no say–but our ‘right wing agenda’ would be winning, right?
Is Trump a king? Technically, no. He was elected. But based on his past, that’s how he governs his affairs–by decree, by whim. And anyone that gets in the way, he has used every power available to him to stop them (whether that’s lawsuits, or big government). And now he has the power of the executive branch, and all its agencies to stop whoever gets in his way.
And so far, the bulk of what he has done in a short time, has been by decree. What’s even MORE telling, is that exchange he had with those Texas sheriffs, where he talked about ending an elected official’s career, based on hearsay concerning a topic he knew nothing about. His vindictiveness, fueled by a need to prove his authority, should be a concern to ANYONE who believes, as the Founders did, that we are a REPRESENTATIVE republic, and not a monarchy. Now imagine Trump’s pettiness, and punitive instincts, WITH the IRS, the FBI, and the justice department at his disposal.
When people point to the ‘good’ he’s doing, they’re ignoring the big picture: his authoritarian instincts which have not changed one bit, since his inauguration. With the most powerful position in the world, why would he see ANY need to change that?
I’m #NeverTrump because I’m against authoritarianism. Even authoritarians can push a right-wing agenda, but they’re still authoritarian. It wasn’t ok when a left wing president ruled by decree. And the next Left wing president that comes along who rules this way, we on the right that defended Trump for doing so will be in no position to protest it.
